Amazon and SK Group Announce $5B AI Data Center Investment in South Korea
Amazon Web Services (AWS) and South Korea's SK Group are committing $5 billion to construct the nation's largest AI data center in Ulsan. The facility, slated for completion by 2029, will initially operate at 100 megawatts with plans to scale to one gigawatt, positioning it as a global AI hub. The project underscores South Korea's aggressive push into AI infrastructure amid a market projected to grow 14.3% annually through 2027.
The data center will deploy four times the GPU capacity of South Korea's National AI Computing Center, addressing soaring demand from industries like telecommunications and cloud computing. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won emphasized AI's critical role in national economic growth during the announcement.
